What is the Weinviertel in Austria?

The Weinviertel is Austria's largest wine-growing region, located in the state of Lower Austria, just north of Vienna. The name translates to "wine district" and the region is known for its vineyards, cellar-lined roads, and variety of wines.

The standout grape variety in this region is Grüner Veltliner, which accounts for over half of Austria's total Grüner Veltliner production. These wines are defined by their distinctive "pepperiness", with notes of green, white, and even black pepper complementing the grape's natural fruitiness and fresh acidity.

The Weinviertel DAC is a quality designation for Grüner Veltliner wines from the Weinviertel region. It was the first Austrian wine region to establish a DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) in 2002, which guarantees the wines are typical of the region and meet strict quality standards. To be labeled as Weinviertel DAC, the wines must be made from 100% Grüner Veltliner grapes grown in the Weinviertel region. They are characterized by a light yellow to greenish-yellow color and a distinct spicy, peppery flavor profile. The wines must be dry, with a maximum of 6 g/L residual sugar and at least 12% alcohol by volume. 

In 2009, a Weinviertel DAC Reserve designation was added for richer, fuller-bodied Grüner Veltliners. DAC Reserve wines must be completely dry and have a minimum 13% alcohol. 

The "Große Reserve" designation was first permitted in 2020 for wines that meet the Reserve criteria and have been aged for an extended period. 

The Weinviertel is an important and historic region within Austria for winemaking. While the large size can mean that overall quality can vary to a greater degree, it also means that there are a wide variety of producers and styles for consumers to sample. The focus on Grüner Veltliner, an autochtonous grape varietal means that this is a region to seek out, particularly for white wine! The DAC designation helps promote the region's signature grape and provide a recognizable style for consumers. While the DAC rules ensure a consistent flavor profile, individual producers can still express their unique terroir and winemaking styles outside the DAC system. Non-Grüner Veltliner wines from the Weinviertel are labeled simply as Niederösterreich.
