What is the Weinviertel in Austria?

The Weinviertel DAC is a quality designation for Grüner Veltliner wines from the Weinviertel region. It was the first Austrian wine region to establish a DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) in 2002, which guarantees the wines are typical of the region and meet strict quality standards. To be labeled as Weinviertel DAC, the wines must be made from 100% Grüner Veltliner grapes grown in the Weinviertel region. They are characterized by a light yellow to greenish-yellow color and a distinct spicy, peppery flavor profile. The wines must be dry, with a maximum of 6 g/L residual sugar and at least 12% alcohol by volume.
In 2009, a Weinviertel DAC Reserve designation was added for richer, fuller-bodied Grüner Veltliners. DAC Reserve wines must be completely dry and have a minimum 13% alcohol.
The "Große Reserve" designation was first permitted in 2020 for wines that meet the Reserve criteria and have been aged for an extended period.
